In this project, the main focus was to use cardboard as the main material to produce a product. We worked with a company called Eco-Glo, which we then later pitched our ideas to. It was a new way of designing and a new use of a material you often consider or associate with packaging. The main focus of this project was to design environmentally friendly products, and how we could use cardboard in an up cycling manor.
I went down the route of using Cardboard Tubing as my main material, and to develop designs around my choice. One of the main benefits of cardboard tubing is that they are extremely strong and quite light for their size. I was able to access cardboard tubes from a furniture manufacturer, enabling me to test and make a prototype of my chosen design, Garden City.
Garden City is a decorative garden light to represent a city skyline at night when office blocks or apartment lights are still on, which is where the light escapes through. With all the tubes coming a variety of sizes, this would allow reduction in packaging and any waste that my come from this, because they all stack within one another creating a flat pack design.
